A great professional labeler
By N. Hawkins
I've been looking for an electronic labeler for quite some time, and I'm happy I got a chance to review this labeler from Brother. In short, it's quite impressive but might be a bit overkill for home use but would be amazing in the workplace.

Setup and install was a snap. All ou have to do is drop in the starter cartridge and drop the CD into the CD drive. The CD walks you through the install and the device plugs directly into a USB port. It's powered by an AC adapter or 8 AA batteries. Total install time was around 5 minutes.

The P-touch Editor software is pretty straight forward in use. It has a number of built-in templates for addresses, cables, asset management, albums, IDs and more. One of the cool things is that there are templates by "purpose", for example, labeling camera memory cards (CF, SD, etc.) Click the dropdown, and it automatically brings up a template. Even without opening the manual, I was able to start cranking out labels for my camera gear (for starters.) You can add clipart, photos, do text manipulation and make pretty neat labels. I threw in my corporate logo into a label and was able to print out very nice looking and non-smearing labels.

The labeler supports multiple tape widths. The device comes with 24mm/0.94" tape. If you're not sure what tape is in the labeler, the P-touch Editor can check the device and tell you what size tape is in the labeler - that is, if you don't look through the transparent lid on the device that tells you what size you have. Pretty nice.

The software also comes with a fairly good software updater, that not only downloads the latest templates and desktop software, but also updates the firmware for the unit itself.

I've spent a good two hours with the labeler thus far, and have been on a labeling spree around the house. The labeler might be a bit of an overkill for a home user, but for a small office or workplace, it's pretty slick. The device is easy to use - almost foolproof. This labelmaker looks and feels like it means business.

Overall happy but could be a little better
By James M. Koury
Pros: System is light and durable for portable use. Labels are strong with clear print. Backing on tape is easy to remove. Screen is back lit for easy viewing. Cartridges are easy to pop in and out to change widths. Nice "preview" option so you can see what the label looks like before printing.

Cons: The rubber buttons are hard to press down. It takes real force so your fingers don't dance across them like on a keyboard. Dont know why it was made like this. And if you choose the option for cutting the label close to the beginning and end of the the label's text to minimize excess blank space and save tape, the machine will actually cut two lengths of tape, one for your label and another 3/4" long blank "waste cut" of ribbon that you have to throw away. Its as though you have to use a certain amount of ribbon whether you want to or not. Not a big deal but annoying as it is unnecessary and adds up.

Overall happy and would buy again

nifty digital labelmaker
By H. F. Gibbard
As a kid in the Sixties I had a Dymo labelmaker and I had a great time labeling all kinds of stuff around the house, including my comic books. But that device, fun as it was, couldn't hold a candle to this new Brother PC Connectable Labeling System.

I found the Labeling System quite versatile. It allows the user to control the font, the size, and other attributes of the labels he or she creates, including graphics. (My wife and I used it to label glasses for a Christmas party, complete with "gift" logos, etc.) It prints quickly and efficiently. The label backing is easy to peel off and the adhesive sticks well.

The labeler can be run either on eight "AA" batteries or with the power adapter provided. The level of functionality is appropriate, with just enough options to control the attributes of the labels but not so many that it becomes bewildering. The display is easy to read and intuitive.

I have only two small complaints. The keys on the Qwerty keyboard require enough pressure that a one-finger hunt-and-peck typing style works better than a traditional keystroke method. Also, the System only comes with a very limited roll of labeling tape, so the user needs to order another one pretty soon after beginning to use the labeler. But for the most part this labeler does exactly what a labeler should, and I have been highly satisfied with the product.
