Samsung Monochrome ML-2955ND Printer

I just went out and picked up this new laser printer. I have been printing 2-3 sheets every day for the last week from my desktop PC, and it has worked fine. I imagine that we will be printing work reports or term papers from school, so it will get a good workout over time. The results were different as I added wireless devices. I list the problem I encountered and a solution. Hopefully, I can save others the time of having to return the printer, calling tech support, or searching for answers.

I connected the printer to my network using Cat5 cable. It is just over 2 feet from my Netgear MR814 802.11b router and my desktop PC, so a wired connection made sense to me. I also set up a wireless connection from my laptop (and visiting family's laptops), so that we could print from around the house.

The initial laptop setup went fine. However, I later noticed that my print jobs stopped going to the printer. The same happened on the other laptops my relatives brought over. I first tried to print from desktop with the Cat5 connection to the router. It printed fine. I found out that I had to:

1. go to 'Printers and Faxes' in XP or
'Devices and Printers' in Windows 7
2. right-click on the Samsung printer and select 'Properties' in XP or
double-click the printer name, and select 'Printer', 'Properties' in Windows 7
3. Select 'Ports'
4. Select 'Add ports...'
5. Select 'Standard TCP/IP Port'
6. click the 'New Port...' button and the 'Next' button
7. type and IP Address (ex: 192.168.0.1) into the box next to
'Printer Name or IP Address'
8. click the 'Next' button.
9. finish

Once I finished those steps, I was able to print again from around the house as well as the backyard.

If this sounds excessive or if you only have one computer, you can always get a USB cord and connect the printer directly to your computer (and run the setup software). You should be just fine.

If you decide to do some peer-to-peer networking later, you can make your printer a shared device, and connect to it through your computer.

Double-sided printing is an interesting feature. The printer has an option to let you save your settings in a profile for later. You need to set the selections for double-sided printing (or select the profile) each time you re-open a program. I have found that I can get good results by selecting 'Long Edge' under the 'Double-sided' printing option.

Terrific printer and a terrific value

Received and hooked up my ML-2955ND printer today. I did not know what to expect since the price of the whole thing is less than what I am used to paying for just a toner cartridge. My first impressions are quite positive.

I connected the printer via an Ethernet (cat-5) cable to my router, thus making it into a network printer. My machines are running Linux Ubuntu 12.04. The CUPS setup did not find a good driver for this model. So I went to Samsung's site and downloaded their UnifiedLinuxDriver_0.92.tar.gz which I unpacked, then executed its install.sh script. This brings up a GUI installation dialog box and takes you through the steps of the installation process. This needs to be done as root because it puts the requisite software in /opt. Additionally, it renames the old /usr/bin/lpr to /usr/bin/lpr.orig, then makes a symlink from /usr/bin/lpr to the new /opt/Samsung/mfp/bin/slpr.

To print from the commandline, just do "lpr filename". Unlike the traditional lpr which works silently, this one pops up a dialog box where you can adjust various printing parameters before clicking "OK". Being a Unix traditionalist, I don't care for dialog boxes. So I removed /usr/bin/lpr (which is a symlink, anyway) and restored /usr/bin/lpr.orig to /usr/bin/lpr. Now, "lpr filename" prints without a dialog box, as God had intended it to.

Some of the printer's blurbs say that it offers 600dpi and 1200dpi resolutions. The 1200dpi is not a true 1200dpi though -- it is an "effective 1200dpi" which is not quite the same. I am happy with the 600dpi mode so I will keep it that way.

It prints pleasantly fast and the print quality is excellent. The printer goes to sleep after a minute of inactivity, in which case it saves electricity and is completely silent. The manual says that it draws less than 1.2 watts in the sleep mode. Since I print very infrequently, I would have rather turned it off completely, but this printer has no On/Off switch. Well, what do you expect at this dirt-cheap price?

Please note that the printer comes with a power cable but no data cables. You will need either an Ethernet cable or a USB cable to hook it up.

Further notes:

1. Looking through the files installed under /opt, I found "/opt/Samsung/mfp/share/ppd/ML-2950spl2.ppd" (2950s means the 2950 series). Probably that file is all we need to install the driver directly through CUPS but I haven't tried.

2. The printer has a web interface. Just enter the printer's IP address (192.168.1.102 in my case) in your web browser to view its settings.

GREAT little printer!

I'm just amazed at how cheap laser printers are now. And they're so GOOD. This is an EXCELLENT laser printer. Here's why:
1) Price. It's under 100 bucks. I think it's actually under 80, right?
2) SMALL FOOTPRINT! YES! Finally a laser printer that doesn't need to be the size of an ottoman!!!
3) SIMPLE FUNCTIONS. No endless sea of buttons on the panel. No complicated design. Just plug it in and PRINT (Well, just about).
Do you want to know what bugs me, and this is almost worth taking it down a star but ALL printers do this:
1) NO printer cable! You get this home, all excited to try it out but - uh oh - NO printer cable! What would it cost to throw in a 3 foot USB printer cable? Do you know how cheap cables are? They are the #1 source of revenue in stores. Did you know that? I used to work in a computer store. Cables cost us like a couple bucks, but we'd sell them for 20 dollars. It's a scam. Stores make more money off of cables then they do off hardware like this printer.

But ok back to the printer. I installed the software, set up the printer, and I was good to go. It was super fast and dead easy to use. It printer really fast, and VERY QUIET! The double-sided printing ability was flawless and really cool!!!

I did find a single flaw: I did not like how you had to extend the internal tray to accept 8.5x11" paper. It felt like I was breaking the tray by pressing the tab and extending it out another 1/4". AND - it sticks out the back of the printer! It's not a major flaw bu any means, but it was kind of annoying. Sort of ruins the nice cube-footprint of this thing, but the cables stick out that back part anyhow so, I guess it's not really an issue. I'll upload a photo of what I'm talking about.

Overall, this is an excellent laser printer! Prints cleanly and FAST and doesn't take up much space. Win-win-WIN!
